Cellulosic Bioethanol from Industrial Eucalyptus globulus Bark Residues Using Kraft Pulping as a Pretreatment

The pulp and paper industry faces an emerging challenge for valorising wastes side-streams generated according to the biorefinery concept. Eucalyptus globulus bark, abundant industrial residue in Portuguese sector, has a high potential be converted into biobased products instead of being burned. This work aimed evaluate ethanol production from E. bark previously submitted kraft pulping through separate hydrolysis fermentation (SHF) configuration. Fed-batch enzymatic provided concentrated hydrolysate with 161.6 g·L−1 cellulosic sugars. S. cerevisiae Ethanol Red® strains demonstrated very good performance, despite negligible xylose consumption. passalidarum, yeast known its capability consume pentoses, was studied simultaneous co-culture Red®. However, bioethanol not improved. best performance achieved by Red®, which maximum concentration near 50 efficiency 80%. Concluding, showed bioethanol, susceptible implementing integrated on plants.
